Independence Day in a Preschool Setting
Independence Day in a Preschool Setting

Independence Day holds a special significance in the hearts of all Indians. The importance of this day cannot be overstated. After nearly 2 centuries of living like slaves in our own country, August 15th brought along with it a newfound joy in the hearts of all Indians. It is the day our freedom fighters fought tooth and nail for, only so that future generations could enjoy its fruits. It is only right that while our children enjoy the fruits of the labour of their forefathers, they are also made aware of the sacrifices that went into achieving our independence.

This Independence Day, as we commemorate India’s freedom from British rule, let us curate some engaging activities and learning experiences tailored to young children.

Independence Day Celebration in School

Flag Hoisting

A simple flag-hoisting ceremony can go a long way in inspiring a sense of pride in the country. It will also be a great opportunity to discuss the importance of the three colours of the flag and the chakra that adorns its centre. It is best to explain the meaning of the flag’s colours in a way that they can understand:

  • Saffron: Stands for courage
  • White: Signifies peace
  • Green: Represents growth

You could also encourage children to make their own flags of paper or fabric. On Independence Day, artwork created by children representing our national symbols can occupy pride of place in the school. Decorating the classroom with the tricolours—saffron, white, and green—and hanging paper flags, streamers, and balloons can help bring the spirit of celebration alive.

Interactive Games

How about setting up a treasure hunt for children where they discover the various symbols of the country? Each discovery can then be followed up with a little discussion of what the symbols stand for. No better way to infuse a sense of excitement in the children while making discoveries that are so integral to the country.

Storytelling

Some interactive storytelling about the history of the country, the sacrifices of freedom fighters and more, could be put to good use. Use short, engaging stories about freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Rani Lakshmibai, and Jawaharlal Nehru, emphasizing values like kindness, bravery, and teamwork. A puppet show or an animated video could also make this history exciting!

Children can also act out scenes from the freedom struggle. It will be such a delight to watch children dressed up as our freedom fighters and enacting their part. Needless to say, these stories will become an integral part of their growing-up years, and they are likely to hold them close.

Patriotic Songs

It will be great for children to sing simple patriotic songs or to sing the National Anthem. You could also encourage children to put up a small dance show on patriotic songs.

Art Activities

Provide magazines, newspapers, or printed pictures of famous Indian landmarks (Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, India Gate) and let children paste them onto a big poster. Encourage them to add drawings of things they love about India—animals, food, festivals, etc, to create an “ I Love India Collage”

It will also be interesting to offer each child paint in one of the tricolour shades and have them stamp their handprint onto a chart paper in a creative pattern. This unity handprint artwork symbolises teamwork. It will also be a wonderful keepsake!

Food Festival

Independence Day will also be a great time to put up a small food festival with food from different states. Children will be able to appreciate the diversity that is prevalent in the country and the fact that we are all united despite this diversity.

You could wrap up the celebration with sweet treats (like ladoos or chocolates).

Community Service

It will be a great idea to introduce the children to some age-appropriate community service. That way, growing up, it can become an integral part of their lives.

To Sum Up

Independence Day is a great opportunity to inspire love for the country in young children. The idea is to focus on activities that are age-appropriate and suitable for young children’s comprehension. Since preschoolers learn best through play and creative activities, it is best to design the activities that way and to make them fun and engaging. You can end the session with a thank-you message encouraging children to be worthy citizens of our country by helping others, keeping their surroundings clean, and respecting one another.

At Footprints Play School, we believe in learning through play and are committed to teaching children the right values in an age-appropriate manner. It is our firm belief that when the right values are taught early, they stay with the children as they navigate life. Independence Day celebrations are thus an integral part of our curriculum as we raise confident individuals who are well-connected to their roots.
